The master of science of environment Prof.Dr.Oktay Tabasaran was born in Nevşehir in 1938. After graduating the Austrian High School Sankt Georg in Istanbul he has started studying civil engineering in 1957 at the University of Stuttgart and specialized on environmental technologies. His doctorate was about, “converting energy from wastewater product processing” (1966). Prof.Dr.Tabasaran has been a genuine pioneer in academic life. In 1972 Solid Waste and Air Waste Economy Department was established in the Stuttgart University for the first time in Germany and Prof.Dr.Tabasaran assumed the responsibility of the head of the department. Prof.Tabasaran had been the chair of Solid Waste Department, the chair of Drinking Water, Waste Water and Solid Waste Institute. He has also established the Environment Protection Institute Faculty and became the Dean of the Faculty. He has started the master program WASTE in English meanwhile. Prof.Dr.Tabasaran has been the consultant of German Federal Environment Ministry , various State Ministries, public and private sector for many years. He has led the evaluation of solid wastes thermally, biologically and recycling plus landfilling. He has been the General Secretary of 5th World Water Forum between 2007 and 2009.
Prof. Dr. Oktay Tabasaran published more than 150 scientific papers, several boks, and more than 200 technical reports to public and private sector, almost in all areas of environmental engineering. His research interest focus on biological and thermal treatment of waste, waste to energy, hazardous waste management, water and wastewater management and treatment.
Dr. Filibeli is Full Professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering at Dokuz Eylul University since 1996. She received the BS degree from Anadolu University, Eskisehir, in 1979 in Civil Engineering, and MS degree from İstanbul Technical University in 1982 in Environmental Technology Program and Ph.D. degree from Dokuz Eylul University in 1988 in Environmental Technology. She received a postdoctoral research fellowship from the Ministry of Environment of Baden Wüttemberg State in Germany and spent one year in Institute für Siedlugswasserbau, Wassergüte-und Abfaellwirschaft at the University of Stuttgart between 1988-1989 as a researcher. She is the director of Treatment Plant Sludge Research Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Engineering in DEU. She has managed more than 25 research projects as the director which supported by TUBITAK, Dokuz Eylul University, Ministry of Environment and Urbanism in different fields of environmental engineering, by focusing mainly on sludge handling and treatment processes (sludge rheology, dewatering, disintegration, minimization, phoshorus elimination, etc.) and anaerobic treatment processes. She is a member of Turkish National Committee of Water Pollution Control (SKATMK), Turkish National Committee on Solid Wastes (KAKAD), International Water Association (IWA), IWA Specialist Group on Sludge Management and Anaerobic Digestion. Prof. Dr Jukka Rintala is a professor at the Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Finland. He is leading the Bio and circular economy research group at TUT, which researches and develops sustainable processes and technologies for material processing in circular economy by combining expertise in various biotechnological (anaerobic digestion, fermentation, bioleaching, bioelectrochemical systems, microalgae) and thermochemical (gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction) processes as well as through the integration of developments in the synthetic biology. Rintala’s recent research focuses on processes and concepts for biogas production and nutrient circulation e.g. from biowastes and sewage sludges as well as for remediation of pulp industry fiber sediments and on landfill mining. He also participates multidisciplinary research developing sustainable sanitation and waste systems for new residential areas in urban living lab environments.
