Prof. Dr. Tanju Karanfil

Prof. Dr. Tanju Karanfil is an internationally recognized leader in water quality and environmental engineering, with extensive expertise in physicochemical treatment processes and emerging contaminant control. His research focuses on disinfection by-product (DBP) formation and mitigation, adsorption processes using advanced carbon-based materials, and the removal of contaminants such as PFAS, microplastics, and taste-and-odor compounds. He also conducts pioneering work on nanobubble technologies, activated carbon regeneration, and the impacts of natural events – including wildfires – on source-water quality.

With a distinguished academic career at Clemson University, Prof. Karanfil has authored numerous high-impact publications and has significantly influenced both scientific understanding and practical applications in drinking water treatment. In his current role as Senior Vice President for Research, he leads university-wide research strategy and innovation initiatives. His interdisciplinary perspective, combining environmental chemistry, materials science, and process engineering, continues to guide global efforts toward safer, more sustainable water resources.
